Sedation Dentistry

Sedation Dentistry is a safe and comfortable dental treatment option for patients who have special needs. It is sometimes called Relaxation Dentistry. Through medication, sedation dentistry provides management of pain and anxiety during professional dental care. The most common types of sedation dentistry are Oral Conscious Sedation and Inhalation Sedation.

Can I Benefit from Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation Dentistry may be for you if you experience or have any of the following.

  • Strong fear of dental treatment
  • Dental problems that are complicated
  • Traumatic dental experiences
  • Fear of shots or needles
  • Trouble getting numb
  • Sensitive teeth

Oral Conscious Sedation

This type of sedation provides deep relaxation even while you are still conscious. The dentist administers a safe and low-cost oral medication that is easy to swallow. Adult patients are usually given Halcion or triazolam. Even as the medication works, you are still able to speak and respond to your dentist's instructions.

Inhalation Sedation

This type of sedation involves the use of Nitrous Oxide and Oxygen, also known as "laughing gas", to help your body become relaxed. It is the most common form of sedation dentistry in use today.
